Becoming a Registered Play Therapist (RPT)

Why become a Registered Play Therapist (RPT)?

Becoming an RPT demonstrates specialized training and expertise in play therapy, helping to build trust with clients, families, and employers. It enhances clinical skills, supports professional growth, and connects therapists to a network of like-minded professionals dedicated to helping children through the power of play.

Registered Play Therapist (RPT) Criteria

To earn the RPT credential through the Association for Play Therapy (APT), professionals must meet specific education, training, and experience requirements. These include:

  • A master’s or higher degree in a mental health field
  • A valid state license to provide clinical services
  • Completion of 150 hours of play therapy-specific training
  • 35 hours of supervision by a Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor (RPT-S)
  • 350 hours of direct play therapy experience with children and families

For full details and the most up-to-date requirements, visit the APT website
